5 Tips to Effectively Repeat a Mantra During Meditation
Learn From a Guru
If you have observed deeply, you will notice that almost all worship practices around the world involve the chanting of mantras in some way. Friends, the primary purpose of a mantra is to connect you with the Divine.
Different worship practices may have different objectives, but it is essential that whenever you chant a mantra, you learn it from an authorized person.
Since we are discussing meditation in this blog post, as I mentioned earlier, there is hardly any meditation practice that does not involve mantra chanting. Every meditation method incorporates mantra chanting.
Therefore, whenever you learn a meditation practice, it is crucial that you learn it from an authorized guru who is an expert in that method.
Only such a guru can properly teach you how to chant the mantra during meditation and for how long to continue it.
In some meditation practices, you may need to chant the mantra initially, and as your meditation deepens, you may have to stop the chanting.
Different meditation methods have their own techniques. Whatever method you choose to meditate, you should first receive initiation from an authorized guru.
That guru will teach you how to chant the mantra during meditation, how many times to chant it, or how much interval to maintain between chants. The correct pronunciation of the words is also very important.
In India, when people wish to chant a mantra dedicated to a deity, they too receive mantra initiation from an authorized guru before they start chanting.
Therefore, if you want to fully benefit from meditation by correctly chanting mantras, it is essential that you learn it from an authorized guru.
Please do not rely on YouTube or books for learning; they will not provide you with as much benefit.
Understand the Mantra
Whenever you chant a mantra during meditation, the first and foremost requirement is to understand the meaning of that mantra.
You see, a mantra is not just a collection of words. There are powerful energies hidden within every mantra. Anyone who correctly and accurately chants a mantra can experience these energies. Each word carries its own vibrations and energy.
For example, if someone hurls an insult at you, you feel anger and discomfort. What is an insult? It is merely the use of negative words directed at you, but the energy of those words is so negative that it affects you adversely.
Similarly, when someone praises you using kind words, it brings you joy. The positive impact of those words resonates with you. Mantras have a similar effect.
Therefore, whenever you chant a mantra during meditation, it is crucial to first understand the mantra thoroughly.
You need to know what the purpose of that mantra is and with what intention you are chanting it. Every mantra has a specific purpose, and it is essential to be aware of and understand that purpose.
Let’s clarify this with an example. In the English language, the letter ‘A’ can begin with words like ‘Apple,’ ‘Arrow,’ or ‘Aeroplane.’
Similarly, when you chant a mantra during meditation, it is vital to fully grasp its meaning. It is essential to comprehend the context in which your guru taught you the mantra. Knowing the purpose behind the mantra is key to chanting it correctly.
Therefore, if you want to chant a mantra effectively during meditation, you must first understand the mantra well. You should comprehend its meaning and purpose.
The meaning and intention with which your guru imparted the mantra to you should be the same understanding and intention with which you chant it.
Only then will you see its positive impact in your meditation. I share this based on my personal experience.
Feeling is Important
In the spiritual realm, the significance of feeling or emotion is immense. When you chant a mantra during meditation, the intensity of your emotions while chanting is of paramount importance.
It is essential that you engage with the mantra emotionally; the more deeply you connect with it, the more profound the results you will experience.
This is a crucial point—when you chant a mantra, you must do so with complete emotional involvement. This is something my Guru taught me, and I am sharing it with you.
Let me explain this with an example that I learned from my Guru, Shri Shiv Kripanand Swami Ji. My Guru taught us all a mantra: “I am a pure soul, I am a sacred soul.”
When you chant this mantra, it is important that when you say, “I am a sacred soul,” you genuinely feel and realize that you are indeed a sacred soul.
You have been born in various countries, in different bodies, and in various castes, but the purity of your soul remains unaffected. You are still, and always have been, a sacred soul.
In the next phase, when you say, “I am a pure soul,” you must fully feel that you are truly a pure soul. You are nothing but a soul; you are not this body.
The body and you are distinct entities. The name you have is a name given to this body. All your relationships are associated with this body.
All your social and material responsibilities also belong to this body. But you, you are solely a soul. When I chanted this mantra with such deep emotion, I experienced extraordinary results.
Therefore, whenever you meditate and chant a mantra, do so with complete emotional involvement. Only then will you receive the benefits of the mantra, and your meditation will be successful.
Focus on Quality, Not Quantity
Throughout my life, I have encountered and heard of many individuals who have chanted a particular mantra millions of times.
In my daily life, while commuting to work, I have seen numerous people who continuously chant mantras throughout the day.
They chant even while walking. Now, I don’t know what benefits they derive from this, but I want to share with you what my Guru taught me.
Whenever you chant a mantra, it is essential to do so with complete emotional involvement. When you chant a mantra with full emotion, your concentration becomes entirely focused on the words of the mantra.
This deep concentration allows you to tap into the energy hidden within those words, and gradually, you begin to attain profound knowledge.
If you are meditating and merely chanting the mantra without understanding its meaning or infusing it with emotion, you will not reap any benefits.
For example, if your meditation practice involves chanting a mantra ten times, as in my Samarpan meditation practice, where the mantra is chanted three times, there is one crucial thing to remember.
When you chant the mantra with complete emotion and concentration, you will notice that by the second, third, or fourth repetition, you begin to reach a deeper state of understanding.
Slowly, you will find that you are unaware of when the mantra chanting ends because you have entered a higher state of meditation.
Therefore, when you chant a mantra with full emotion and concentration, even just two or three repetitions can lead you to a deep state of meditation. This is why you should not give importance to the quantity but rather to the quality.
I have often heard people proudly say that they have chanted a mantra a certain number of times or that they have recited a mantra millions of times.
But I have always wondered whether this has increased their ego, and whether they have truly achieved the real purpose of mantra chanting. Only God knows.
Hence, you should also prioritize quality over quantity. Only then, when you chant a mantra during meditation, will you experience its true benefits.
Using Additional Tools
In my journey of meditation, I have also utilized various additional tools at times. For instance, I used to set a timer on my mobile phone.
If I found myself repeatedly distracted by thoughts during meditation, I would set a one-minute timer.
This way, the timer would go off every minute, allowing me to check whether I was actually meditating or if my mind had wandered.
Similarly, you can use various additional tools to assist with mantra chanting. Today, there are many types of tools available in society that can help you chant mantras correctly or keep count of your repetitions.
One particularly effective option is using audio aids.
For example, when you are meditating, you can meditate along with an audio clip, as in guided meditation. As the audio chants the mantra, you can chant along with it.
This method can be highly beneficial as it enhances your concentration and helps you pronounce the mantra correctly. Additionally, it reduces the chances of your mind getting distracted.
However, I have not heavily relied on additional tools throughout my life. I used them only in the early stages of my practice.
According to my Guru, you should minimize the use of additional tools as much as possible and strive to be self-reliant.
Therefore, I would suggest that while it’s fine to use additional tools in the beginning, you should gradually reduce your dependence on them and ultimately aim to become completely self-reliant in your mantra chanting and meditation practice.
